Hi, and welcome,
Identity theft has become a major problem not just in the United States but around the world as well. We have several pages on this site that explain the many issues about Identity Theft. If you read all of the pages you will become more informed and better prepared.
There are things that you can do to prevent Identity Theft. Even after you have done all that you can do there still remains the possibility that you can become a victim. One last thing that you can do is to obtain a good quality Identity Theft protection service. The monthly charges are low. Prices vary a small amount between services. The quality of services vary from company to company. A page that lists and compares several companies is provided for your convenience
It seems that the people of this world have become reliant on credit cards, debit cards, online bank account transactions, making purchases on the internet, etc, It has also become a wonderful opportunity for those dishonest persons that are very willing to steal your identity.
My personal experience:
A while back I had to close out a banking account because of someone attempting to gain access to it. It was really a bad experience. There were so many auto deposits and deductions in that account. There were about ten total. I had to notify each individual company. It took several days to completely notify all of them. It was a real hassle to call and/or visit all of those companies to get it all straightened out.
Another time my credit card account was closed down and a new account was given because of a breech in that credit card company's security.
I do encourage you to find a good source of idenity theft protection. I did. It will be well worth it just for your peace of mind.

Some of the things that you will need to do if it does happen to you.

Call your bank and/or credit card company
-
Contact the three major credit repositories
-
Go through the helpful but expensive steps recommended by the Federal Trade Commission in its 30-page consumer support publication
-
Fill out and submit the affidavit form supplied by the FTC to dispute new, unauthorized accounts
-
Spend on average $1,200 in out-of-pocket expenses and an average of 175 hours in your efforts to resolve the many problems caused by identity thieves
